Region

Zakarpatye is one of the most beautiful regions of Ukraine as well as one of the most ancient and well known winemaking centers of Europe. Its nature is distinguished with its fantastic wealth and variety where it is possible to simultaneously admire the breadth and expanse of fields, the unique landscapes of mountain ridges as well as vast rivers that run through the region. Importantly, this territory is officially recognized as reserved, making it the only place in Ukraine where manufacturing of ecologically pure products is possible.

Rich in agricultural heritage and recognized as the birthplace of Ukraine's premium wine industry, Zakarpatye is home to vineyards planted by its early settlers. For over three thousand years, the slopes from this side of the Carpathians decorate green terraces of vineyards. With a maritime climate that produces cool nights and warm days, the region is blessed with exactly the right combination of soil, sun, seasonal moisture, and geography for growing grapes of exceptional quality.

Zakarpatye's winemaking history dates back thousands of years and is still very much a part of people's lives today. The process of making wine is romanticized and stories are told to children about its origin. Perhaps one of the oldest tales includes a story of Zeus who ruled over the gods of Olympus.

A young prince who loved nothing more than the taste of wine caused so much trouble that in an effort to teach him a lesson, Zeus exiled him to southwest slopes of the Carpathian Mountains, a region unfamiliar with wine. As time passed and the prince's cravings grew, he decided to teach the people of Zakarpatye the elements of winemaking. The ancestors of this region have long since mastered this science producing a variety of some of the best tasting wines in the world.

What makes Zakarpatye truly unique is its remarkable suitability for the production of wine grapes. Mixed with its geography, heritage and beauty, it truly is one of the world's great wine regions.
